Leadership, Not Resources, Will Determine Nigeria’s Future –Kwairanga
The Group Chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), Alhaji (Dr.) Umaru Kwairanga, has identified quality leadership as the decisive factor in Nigeria’s development, arguing that the nation’s potential can only be translated into progress through credible institutions and responsible stewardship.
Speaking as Chairman at a leadership event organized by SixthSense Leadership at the Oriental Hotel, Lagos, Kwairanga stressed that while Nigeria possesses an enterprising population, natural resources, and talented professionals, the ability to convert these advantages into sustainable growth depends on leadership quality.
“Discussions about Nigeria’s development often focus on the resources we possess, the opportunities available to us and the policies required to unlock our economic potential,” he said. “However, one factor that ultimately determines how effectively we translate potential into progress is the quality of leadership within our institutions.”
The NGX Group Chairman called for a redefinition of leadership success, urging leaders to focus on institutional strengthening rather than personal achievements.
“The true measure of leadership should not be limited to what an individual achieves while in office, but should also include the strength of the institution and the opportunities created for those who come after,” Kwairanga stated.
He underscored the critical role of institutional leadership in attracting investment, noting that “financial markets thrive where there is confidence, transparency and consistency,” and that investors commit capital based on confidence in governance structures.
Kwairanga also challenged current leaders to prioritize succession planning and talent development, describing these as “essential responsibilities” rather than optional considerations.
“Leadership should never become an obstacle to the emergence of new leaders,” he said. “Rather, one of its greatest achievements should be the development of capable successors who can take institutions further.”
The event, convened by Mr. Bright “UK” Ukwenga, brought together business leaders, policymakers, and professionals to discuss leadership’s role in Nigeria’s economic transformation.
In his closing remarks, Kwairanga urged participants to translate conference insights into organizational change, emphasizing that “the future of Nigeria will not be determined by the scale of our potential alone” but by the collective ability to build credible institutions and invest in people across generations.
